Micro-surgical Endodontics

In the last 20-25 years Surgical Endodontics has became a Specialty with long term results predictable like never before. The introduction of the Surgical Operating Microscope, the use of ultrasonic tips and the new biocompatible materials are the most important developments which contributed to improve and increase the long term prognosis from 50% like it was before to more than 95% today. There is a precise protocol that must be followed and then the satisfactory results will arrive!

The several steps of the surgical procedure must be followed properly and completely to guarantee a successful therapy. These steps will be discussed in detail during the course and the participants will have the opportunity to apply them during the work-shop working on natural teeth mounted on special anatomically designed models.

At the conclusion of this two-day course, the participants will be able to:

• make a correct treatment plan and decide when the surgical approach in best indicate
• understand the causes of the previous failed endodontic therapy and how to best achieve a predictable result
• make the patient and the surgical team comfortable during the entire procedure
• obtain a profound anesthesia and excellent hemostasis, having a good control of the bleeding
• choose the most suitable flap design that guarantees an ideal visibility
• atraumatically retract the flap in order not to damage the soft tissues and obtain a comfortable access
• access the surgical site, remove the granulation tissue and perform a correct apical resection
• keep the bony crypt and the resected root under control to maintain good visibility
• accomplish an adequate root-end preparation and place the retrofill
• choose the best retrofilling material atraumatically and precisely reposition the flap
• place accurate sutures that can be removed 24/48 hours post-operatively
• use atraumatic techniques capable to eliminate post-operative pain, swelling and any kind of discomfort
• prescribe the most effective drugs to guarantee a rapid and uneventful healing
